The game started in the best possible way for the home side, almost on their first spell of possession a perfectly weighted bomb from Rhys Joel was taken brilliantly in the air by Josh Korobiau who touched down out wide on the RN right. The conversion was unsuccessful but a good start nonetheless 4:0. The Hoists regrouped and began pressing for points themselves aided by a couple of soft penalty’s conceded by the RN. However strong and determined Brothers defence did keep the visitors at bay for the next 15 minutes but eventually the home almost inevitably the score came. 2nd Row Josh Fisher finished of a cross field move on the Hoists left to level the scores, 4:4. After RN pressure was resisted and helped by a penalty the Hoists were on the attack, this time from deep a well worked move completed by Kane Strachan, again out on their left doubled the visitors lead 4:8. That was how it stayed to the half time break with much for Coach Bamford to talk about in the dressing room.
Unfortunately, the second half was more of the same for the RN, a lot of effort across the team but soft penalty’s and handling errors halted any momentum the Brothers gained as the game wore on. The score remained at 4:8 until the 51st minute when 2nd row Fisher crossed for his second of the match, no conversion for this one either so 4:12 it was. With plenty of time left on the clock the Brothers enjoyed probably their best spell of the match penning the visitors in their own half but it all came to naught. A great move by the RN had the home fans out of their seats but the last pass was a little too high for Ben Chambers to gather and score which just about summed up the day for the Brothers. Hammersmith rounded off the scoring late on with a try for Jordan Best which in turn was converted by scrum half and skipper Jack Ryan to leave the final score, a disappointing 4:18. This brings this year’s Challenge Cup to an end for us but the Hoists now have to prepare for the visit of Salford RLFC in the second round.
Head Coach Bamford commented on the game at full time: "Yes, disappointed, you don't win a game of rugby without the ball. but we just played straight into their hands today. I can't fault the boy's effort as around the middles today was a tough slog and we just let ourselves down with our completion rate today."
