Round 2 – Royal Navy v Royal Air Force

Wrenegades 14: 10 Royal Air Force Ladies

The Ladies fixture proved to be a an exciting game with the RAF ladies showing how far they had developed coming close to gaining their first victory over the Wrenegades. In fact the RAF took the lead a little against the run of play after 10 minutes with an unconverted try that showed their intent from the start. The RN regained their composure and fought their way back into the RAF half pressing for the equalising score which came finally after 18 minutes with a first try for Scrum half Sarah Jenkins. Sam Alderson just missed out on the two points the conversion attempt hitting the post and bouncing out. Both sides were now eager for more points and another ten minutes or so of entertaining rugby went by before the RAF ladies once again crossed for their second try of the match, skipper Vickie Dillon-Davies leading by example impossibly her last match bursting over under the posts. RAF Scrum half Emma Walker converted the try to give her team a six point advantage. The RAF came closest to adding to their points tally before the break more good work by Dillon-Davies saw her cross the line only for the try to be chalked off for a knock on. Half time saw the scoreboard showing the RAF in the lead by 4:10.

The second half saw the RN gain in confidence looking to get back on terms with the RAF, after some promising work through midfield the RN changed the point of attack and a terrific break by Emma Swinton put the RN Ladies well into the RAF 22 a couple more plays brought the attack close to the posts and Sophie Roseman powered over to score her first try in RN colours. This time Alderson was on target so the scores were all square again. Still pressing for the win the RN continued to attack which finally brought the winning score this time Lou Graham crossing to score what turned out to be the winning points. The Wrenegades held out for the remaining 5 minutes or so to maintain their dominance of this fixture however credit to the RAF as the match was much closer than in the past. Player of the match was awarded to RAF No 2 Freya Lees.
