RN Ladies return to winning ways

This year the Ladies fixture got things underway in glorious sunshine with just a light breeze giving the players some respite from the unseasonably high temperatures. Playing into the sun the home team made a couple of handling errors early on giving the RAF some territorial advantage but despite this the breakthrough would not come. The RN Ladies came close to the first score after five minutes, a good set to approach the RAF line by the RN ended with skipper Sam Alderson putting in a high cross field kick which was spilled by the defence but was gathered by the RN backs. The last pass however was adjudged to have been forward so the scores remained 0:0. The game was 13 minutes old before the first score and after a bit of pressure the RAF scored out wide despite the RN cover Stacey Graham touched down out wide for her team. The kick was wide so after 13 minutes it was 0:4. Ten minutes later the RN responded, after a spell of concerted pressure the ball went through hands in midfield before finding Nicola Elvidge out wide who crashed over taking the defender with her, 4:4 after 25. Despite a lot of good play and not a little effort from both sides he score remained tied at 4 all at the break.
The visitors took the initiative after the break not allowing the RN to settle a good attack ended with Hayley Needes beating the RN cover to cross and double her teams score. This time Sophie Grogan was on target with her conversion attempt and the RAF were ahead by 4:10. Despite starting with only16 in the squad the RN began to take charge of the game and their efforts were rewarded after 53 minutes when Zoe West forced her way through the RAF defence to score to the left of the posts making Sam Alderson’s conversion straight forward, the RN skipper obliged with the two points so going into the last quarter the teams were all square. The last quarter saw the RN take charge of the game with a great try by Olly Critchley who beat the RAF cover with a great run to touch down almost on the touchline. Alderson’s Kick fell just short but the RN now were looking strong and were eager for more points. The final try went to player of the match Loz Morton who had come close earlier in the match with a 40 metre break to be halted by a last ditch effort by full back Nickki Hymes. However in almost a mirror of her first effort Morton took the ball in her own half and beat the RAF cover to race another 40 metres or so to the line. This time she was not to be denied and touched down despite the attentions of the RAF defence to the right of the posts. Alderson hammered over her second conversion of the match to put the RN 20:10 ahead and effectively seal the game. The RAF Ladies did respond in the dying minutes of the game but the Wrenegades defence held firm and Referee Dave Moss blew for fulltime with the Wrenegades securing their first win in a difficult season, a fine reward for a lot of effort and determination throughout.
Wrenegades head coach Kev Hunt was delighted to see his team put all their hard work into practise in this the last match of the season to register another win over the RAF. Equally delighted was Steve Smallbone who had been with the RN Ladies from the beginning and had flown back from Thailand to assist Coach Hunt and the team throughout the IS campaign. Player of the match award was given to loose forward Loz Morton however the rest of the pack deserve much praise for putting in a great shift throughout and with the backs in support it was a great team performance.
