Trafalgar Cup 2015 - AJ Bell Stadium, Salford (12 Jul 15)

Following a 46-22 victory over the Bristol Sonics on the 24th June, the refreshed RMRL squad reconvened on the 6th July at CTCRM, ready to begin build-up training for the season’s blue riband event; the Trafalgar Cup vs the Parachute Regiment. CSgt Ben Mardle, the Team Manager, had to step in as coach in the absence of CSgt Taff Rossiter, and he underwent the task of preparing the team for what is always a monumental battle.

This year was the Paras’ turn to host; they elected to play the game at the AJ Bell stadium in Salford, just prior to the Salford vs Hull KR game. This turned out to be a good choice – Salford Red Devils hosted the match fantastically, and the players from both sides were treated like professional players.

The match itself started in the Corps’ favour, with Sgt John Coe going over after less than 5 minutes. The Paras immediately fought back though, capitalising on some RM mistakes and employing some excellent inside passing and running to take the score to 10-4 after about 20 minutes. This seemed to galvanise Royal; for the remainder of the first half the game became far more gritty and physical, but with some inspired in-field kicking by stand-off Mne Rich Cadywould, the Corps stretched the lead to 22-10 through tries by Tom Marchant, Rowan Griffith-Jones, and John Coe. Half time – 22-10.

The second half began as the first had finished, with the Paras scoring an early try to put the pressure on Royal. The match continued at a relentless pace, and both sides produced Rugby League worthy of a Super League ground, in front of an increasing number of Salford fans. Veteran player Steve Riley touched down for the Corps half-way through the second half, meaning the Paras now had to score three times to at least level the score. Not to be beaten easily though, the Paras responded with some very strong forward running and some creative back play; the pace of the Paras’ wingers was always a threat, and had it not been for the solid defence of RM full back Mel Gilmour, the Corps could easily have let slip their lead.

However, a final 2-pointer from Rich Cadywould (who had an outstanding game with the boot) sealed the victory on the final whistle. 36-26. Cpl Mark Sharp was awarded Man of the Match for his untiring effort at prop, which provided the platform for the Corps to launch their scoring attacks

Once again, a fantastic event, amply supported by serving and non-serving RMs and Paras; the Corps retained the Trafalgar Cup, and the only thing left to write is….bring on next year’s game!
