On the plane, off the plane, back on the plane, now play...!! Renown United RLFC 24 - 18 RMRL

The Royal Marines Rugby League tour to Sydney, Australia began well, despite the loss to Renown United RLFC on Thu 26 June. Renown are a successful amateur club side who have a decent pedigree, especially against the RN and CSRL touring sides in the past.

48 hours after getting off the plane, the RM players got their first taste of antipodean rugby against a well drilled opposition. The fixture was played under the lights at Cahill Park in front of a crowd including a large number of Expats, former Royals who have emigrated and/or transferred to the ADF and attached ranks. Of particular note was former RM PTI Stevie ‘Scruff’ Hargreaves and his ridiculous accent!!

Regarding the rugby, 24-18 to Renown is by no means a bad result considering the conditions, acclimatisation issues and the standard of opposition. The hosts benefited from playing together on a regular basis which was evident in their strong defensive structure and fluid attacking patterns. However the tourists gave a good account of themselves but unfortunately ended on the wrong end of a 24-18 deficit.

Scorers details to follow……..

Next fixture is versus a Tertiary XIII to be played at Cabramatta Football Club, Sydney on 1 July. Kick off at 1900hrs (local).
