The match will be played on Sunday 12 July 2015 with a 1pm kick off with Salford and Hull KR off at 3pm.
This fixture is one of the most prestigious games in the calendar of both RM and Army rugby league and is never short of entertainment and incident as anyone who was at Taunton last year will testify!
The Royals came out on top last year after coming from behind with a strong second half showing; last year’s result however counts for nothing so it will be a case of who can stand the heat on the day
This is how last year’s clash played out!
After an average first half showing which left them ten points adrift at half time RMRL totally dominated the second half scoring 27 unanswered points to take the match 31 points to 14.
The match was at the home of Taunton RFC and was played in temperatures in the high 20's Centigrade throughout with little breeze to give the players any relief. Credit to both sides who attempted to play good rugby which was entertaining to say the least especially to the very partisan and vocal home crowd from 40 Cdo just down the road.
Led by veteran prop Carl Gilson the Corps side took complete charge of the second half almost from the off with skipper Gilson showing the way with a score after barely five minutes. The Corps needed this early second half score to steady their nerves after an opening period which was full of unforced errors and a poor set completion rate. Going behind to two early scores, Royal forced themselves back in contention with the RN Union's Twickenham star Dave Fairbrother crossing the line untouched to get the score to 6-8. The visitors managed to cross the RM line again before the half ended and the hosts lost influential loose forward Calan Toogood with a broken wrist.
After a rousing halftime talk from head coach Lee Rossiter' the RM scoring continued steadily after team captain and stalwart, Gilson's try. Fijian flyer Kitione Kamikamica touched down in the corner after a long ball by Richard Cadywould before the final two try's being scored by second row Fairbrother who completed his hat trick for the night. Standoff Cadywould had a faultless night with the boot, putting over five good conversions with a late drop goal for good measure.
Full back Melvyn Gilmour was awarded the Man Of Steel award by the Corps RSM and RMRL President, WO1(RSM) Alistair McGill MBE QGM RM, after a terrific performance both in attack and specifically in defence where he made at least three try saving tackles as last line of defence.
A great night for the Corps once again, not only regaining the Trafalgar Cup but extending their lead in the overall competition with 7 wins to the Para's 5. A fantastic result in the RM350 year which also saw the match ball and trophy being delivered by Go Commando mascot Colonel Kev Ted with the assistance of 815 Squadron's Lynx helicopter. In excess of £250 was raised on the night to go towards 40 Cdo and the RM Corps charities.
