On a gorgeous spring afternoon at RNRL HQ the Brothers ran in 10 trys with 4 conversions against a Chargers side who fought hard throughout but could not breach the RN defence. As the team sheet noted 11 players made their full debut in this match and, in the absence of Ben Taylor, Danny Johnson was awarded the captaincy, ably supported by front row partner James Tilley as Vice Captain
Played in bright sunshine and with an easterly breeze the conditions were about as good as you could hope for and the pitch, despite the best efforts of the Masters, was looking near perfect for the game. The Chargers kicked off into the sun with the breeze behind them and we were off. Some good initial surges by the Chargers kept the brothers on their toes but great defence from the word go nullified the threat. Ten minutes in and now settled into their stride the RN posted the first of their trys, winger Nimilote Nabure rounding off the move to touch down far out on the RN Right 4:0. Less than 10 minutes later the score was doubled in an almost copy of the first score, this time it was Sean Houghton playing at scrum half for the day touched down to finish the move. The scores kept coming at regular intervals throughout the half, next on the score sheet was Jack Bartlett who forced his way through the Chargers defence to the left of the posts twisting as he went over to ground the ball for his sides third try, full back Danny Dainty ,another on full debut, slotted over the conversion 14:0. The Chargers were struggling to get on terms now and almost from the restart the Brothers were over again, Eden Quantock on debut storms through the defence to ground the ball, 18:0. The right flank of the RN attack was hammering the Chargers defence , Joey Sugden being the next to score out wide and with a great touchline conversion by Houghton the Brothers were comfortably ahead 24:0 on 35 minutes. Still time for another one though, Jack Ray, recently picked up by Cornwall RLFC for the season, used his strength and experience to scatter the defenders crossing under the posts giving Houghton a straight forward 2 pointer. That was the half then 30:00 up and the team looking balanced well drilled as if they had been together all season.
2 quick trys after he break only reinforced the Brothers Domination, the pick of the two was started by Kini Dakuliga who gathered a speculative kick in his own half and took the ball over half way deep into Chargers territory before slipping the pass out to Danny Dainty who beat the cover in some style to score his debut try for the Brothers and, taking the ball round under the posts, made Sean Houghton's conversion straight forward. This score plus a further unconverted effort pushed the score board along to 40:00. This spurred the Chargers on and for a good ten minutes they pushed the RN defence hard in an effort to score but once again the brothers held firm eying perhaps a repeat of the Bridgend victory. Loose Forward Charlie Mattison got his name on the scoresheet at the 60 minute point , yet another on Debut no conversion though so going into the last quarter it was 44:0. More spirited play from the Chargers during the last 20 again tested the RN defence which held firm once more keeping the Chargers from a consolation score. Last score of the day was one of the best, the ever influential James Tilley started the move in midfield, slick hands saw the ball get to Dakuliga who once again beta the cover to touch down himself this time, no conversion so there it was , Referee Lockton's whistle brought the game to a close, another impressive victory for the RN, 48:00.
A very satisfied Steve Lockton praised his team for their professionalism, coping with the disruption of the Academy fixture cancellation and the manner in which they came together with the great mixture of experience throughout the squad guiding the newer players into a comprehensive victory
