RNRL Head Coach Steve Lockton

Keith Humpleby9 Nov 2022 - 12:17

In preparation for leaving the service next year Steve Lockton has announced he is stepping down from RNRL Head Coach with immediate effect

Steve (Pictured 2nd left) joined the service in 1999 and after completing training began his journey with RN and Services Rugby League. His journey as a player began on the red side of Hull with time at the Hull FC Academy before joining the Royal Navy. Once in the service his playing career saw him scoop a hatful of awards both individual and team notably 2 Inter Services wins, series victories with RN and CS sides in Australia and a total of 11 RN Origin wins for his side, the Blues. Personally, he was awarded RN Captaincy in 2007, CS vice Captaincy 2006 and captaincy in 2013 as well as winning CS Player Of The Year 2004 and RNRL Man Of Steel 2008.

2013 saw Locky retire from playing and take up the role of Head Coach and so began the most successful period in RNRL history. His debut Inter Services as coach in 2014 was the first success for the Brothers since 2008, followed a year later by the first back to back triumph for RNRL. A further IS victory in 2017 was just rewards for both Locky’s efforts and his Band Of Brothers. Once again, his efforts were recognised by being named RN Sports Official Of The Year runner up in 2015 going on to win the title in 2016. The Brothers success was not just confined to domestic fixtures when, in 2018 Locky led his squad to a remarkable 3-0 whitewash of Royal Australian Navy RL, truly, a highpoint in the Associations history.

Following the void caused by Covid Locky put together the ‘Class of 22’ to take the Association into its 25th anniversary season and what a season it turned out to be. However, despite creditable performances during his tenure as Coach, success in the Challenge Cup had eluded the Brothers, this all changed in 2022 with a cup run that took the side to the 4th round, another first for the Brothers. Despite going down to top championship side Batley Bulldogs this was a victory for Locky and his squad, massive and justifiable coverage on local and national media saw the teams efforts highlighted across the sport and beyond. Onwards to Inter Services 2022, Locky coached his squad to victories over the RAF and Army to claim the Seniors title for the 6th time and his personal tally as coach to 4!

Steve Locktons drive, determination and immense passion for Rugby League has been unequivocal for 23 consecutive seasons, 13 as a player and the following 9 as Head Coach, during which time he was also directly or indirectly involved with the development and support of UKAF RL. An exemplary sportsman on the pitch as a player and on the touch line as Coach, his contribution to RN and Service sport has been nothing short of exceptional and RNRL will be forever grateful for his efforts over an amazing career.

………..However, we are glad to confirm that Steve will remain within the Association on the Exec Committee as Head Of Coaching,

The new RNRL Senior Team Head Coach will be announced in the next few days – watch this space!
