RNRL 9's Competition Update

The aim of the 9’s Tournament is to support promotion of Royal Navy Rugby League (RNRL) and the player pathway within the service. The aim is to have a competitive but fun competition whilst at the same time allowing Senior Coaches to monitor player progress looking forward to Inter Services in September

LPT Luke Warrington is the sponsor for this year’s event and the tournament is open to all RN, RM and Reserve units as well as individual players to make up a ‘Barbarians’ team. Any team or individual wishing to enter are to send the entry proforma at the documents section of this page to Luke at

The 2016 competition was won by the team from HMS Queen Elizabeth, after a mammoth journey from Scotland to HMS Sultan. The team led by Jackson Drury beat the hosts, HMS Sultan, in the deciding match 10:6 to round off an afternoon of quality 9's Rugby League.
This result justified the epic journey south for the QE squad and the victory was made even sweeter as the Player Of The Tournament award went to RNRL and GBAF half back Ryan Mathew. For those keen on statistics this was the first time a Ships team had won the 9's trophy since 2003 when HMS Invincible took the title, again at Sultan, under head coach 'Aussie' Mal Badham. The victory also created a bit of naval history it being the first Sports Trophy won by the new HMS Queen Elizabeth
