The Jack Harrison VC Trophy – ko 1600

The Seniors match, as always, sees the two sides compete for The Jack Harrison VC trophy, named after a Hull native who gave his life in the first World War. The following citation gives a brief insight into the career of a truly remarkable man

John (Jack) Harrison, a schoolmaster, was a star wing three-quarter with Hull FC in the years before the Great War. He was a regular first team player and a top try scorer. On the outbreak of war in August 1914 he immediately joined the Army as a private soldier. He was soon granted a commission in his local Battalion of the East Riding Regiment. During the battle for Arras in 1917, having already won the Military Cross for bravery, he charged an enemy machine gun position alone to save many of his comrades. He was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously, missing believed killed.

To honour this extraordinary soldier and player, Army Rugby League presented the Jack Harrison VC Memorial Trophy to the, then, Combined Services Rugby League in the year 2000, to be contested for annually in the Inter-Services fixture between the Army and the Royal Navy.

RNRL has had many Hull natives in our squads over the years and we look forward to seeing some familiar faces on the day joining us for what promises to be a fantastic day of Inter Services Rugby League.

There will also be representatives from the RN Submariners Veterans Association on site throughout the day offering advice to veterans of any service as well as spinning a few dits so if you need a chat look out for their Gazebo!

If you cannot make it to Craven Park on the day BFBS will be streaming the Womens fixture and the Seniors game live on their YouTube Channel.
