The Army took the initiative early ion with trys for Donovan De Jongh and Loz Hamzatt. The match was full of incident with Ref Butterfill having his hands full throughout the game with the first major flashpoint seeing a player from each side spending 10 mins on the touchline. From the resulting Penalty RN skipper Sam Carter got his side on the score board with a good penalty conversion 2:8. Back came the Army and De Jongh crossed for his second of the game. Sam Carter lead by example scoring the first of his side’s trys out wide but was unable to convert 6:12 at the break. The second half began with an exchange of trys Hooker Crofts for the RN saw his effort cancelled out by a Sam Jones score for the Army. Crofts went over again for his second of the night, another conversion by Carter saw the side’s level as the game went into the last quarter. The tough physical Army side took the game away from the RN in the last 20, Loz Hamzatt completing his hat trick whilst Jones touched down again for his second. The RN responded late on with Crofts touching down for his hat trick which was again converted by Carter. With the RN again reduced to 12 men the Army ran in a couple of late trys to confirm their dominance of the half as they ran out 22-42 winners. Perhaps not unsurprisingly the Man of the match awards went to the two hat trick scorers from the match, Loz Hamzatt from the Army and Todd Crofts for the home side
