As the Rugby Union season approaches its climax plans for the Rugby League season are going well in an effort to build on the progress made in 2017

The first event for the Wrenegades will be a training camp in Portsmouth over 8-10 June to get the squad together under new coach Matthew ‘Jim’ Bowen. This will be the start of the 2018 Inter Services campaign as the cross code player’s return from Rugby Union duties and new players get together for the first time. The following weekend the squad will travel to West Yorkshire to take on the Brighouse RLFC Women which will be a great measure of the progress of the side.

July is a busy month just ahead of the Summer Leave period with the Wrenegades joining the men’s sides at the 2018 Sate of Origin to deliver grass roots RL training to pupils from schools local to the Origin venue for this year’s Petersfield RU Club. Finally the Wrenegades will compete in the annual London 9’s Tournament one of the biggest events of its kind in the country.

The Wrenegades are always looking for new players from the RN, RM Band Service and of course the Royal Naval Reserves so if you are interested in being a part of the Wrenegades please contact Head Coach Jim Bowen on 07488 280837 or at bowen_matthew@sky.com

Congratulations to the RN Womens RU side that beat a Swansea University side last week in Wales, the match was a tense affair finishing 19-15 to the RN side. The victorious RN side featured a player of the match performance by Sarah Jenkins who bagged two trys on the night. The third RN try was scored by Nic Elvidge with two conversions to RU and RL captain Sam Alderson. The squad featured a further 3 RN Rugby cross coders, Helen Stevenson (V Capt on the night), Billi Staite and Drew Powell.

2018 promises to be a massive season for Womens Rugby League across the board with the launch of the Womens Super League, the first round set for 15th April. Unsurprisingly the Wigan Warriors have a team entered for the competition and amongst the ranks of the Wigan side is Cpl Katie Coen of RAF and UKAFRL fame. Katie’s selection for the Wigan squad demonstrates there is a pathway for service RL players to reach the highest level in the women’s game. All involved in Services RL wish her good luck for the coming season with the first Warriors match being at home to the Featherstone Rovers Women at Orrell RUFC on Sunday 15th April, more info at www.wiganwarriors.com
